Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide respectful, fun, face to face meetings where we can come together to share our haiku and support each other in the further development and appreciation of this poetry form originating from Japanese culture.

Where We Meet

We meet in-person on the 2nd Saturdays of the month from noon to 2 pm at Sellwood Community House (SCH), 1436 SE Spokane St, Portland 97202

Sellwood Community House website: https://www.sellwoodcommunityhouse.org/

We also have quarterly Zoom only meetings for HSA (Oregon poets and others)

Please contact Shelley at: sbakergard@msn.com for details.

How Meetings Are Organized

  • Introductions of new attendees

  • The first part of the meeting will be reading unsigned haiku or senryu submitted by group members to the host at least 3 days prior to the meeting (the submission is preferably new and in season). At the meeting, the host will hand out a sheet to each person with all the poems on it. Each person silently reads all the haiku/senryu/tanka and note the ones they like best. After everyone has completed the selections, we will go around the room and tell which ones we chose and why we chose it. After everyone has had a chance to speak, the authors will then read their poem and an improvisational flute interpretation of the poem may be provided.

  • The second part of the meeting is devoted to increasing our knowledge about haiku or senryu, and the discussion of any group business or announcements.

  • Between the 2 parts of the meeting, we will have a short break

  • We will generally use the definitions of haiku and senryu as described by the HSA:

Haiku Society of America Definitions (hsa-haiku.org)
